Best E Ink Tablets for 2022: Note-Taking Solutions for Back-To-School

Most tablets offer a slew of distractions for students, but big-screen E Ink tablets are different. They combine the distraction-free and easy-reading environment of a Kindle-style e-reader with the writing and note-taking ability of a traditional tablet. This makes them especially well-suited for students who are looking for a device that will help them get the most out of their studies. 

E Ink tablets eschew the bright LCD displays and super-fast processors of AppleMicrosoftSamsung, Google and Amazon, in favor of the sharp and energy-efficient gray scale of E Ink technology. While most E Ink tablets have some kind of rudimentary web browser, these devices aren't intended to surf the web or provide the latest updates from social media. They're meant for reading and writing, with the most paper-like experience possible. 

While you won't be able to stream your favorite show or watch the latest Tik Tok video on these tablets, you will be able to take them into the classroom without disturbing the professor or your classmates. 

Which one is right for you? I've rounded up the best devices with a minimum screen size of 10 inches and stylus support.

The ReMarkable 2 is the best E Ink tablet for students who love to take lots of handwritten notes. It is only 0.19 inches thick and 0.88 pounds, which makes it light and easy to carry in your backpack.This 10.3-inch tablet uses a monochrome digital display with a resolution of 226 DPI. The writing and text looks clear and sharp, and you can choose from over 40 different page templates for notes, including seven options just for musical notation. The software is easy to use, with clear buttons at the top for you to add notebooks and folders. It has 8GB of internal storage and an optional cloud storage service for $8 per month (after a 100-day free trial). That Connect service also does handwriting conversion and has Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive integration.

The included stylus doesn't require pairing or charging but supports tilt detection and a standard 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity. Practically speaking, it offers the most realistic writing experience of any tablet I've ever used. The screen has a paper-like feel, which gives the pen a level of friction that feels incredibly true to life. 

The ReMarkable 2 also shines with PDFs. Highlights automatically straighten themselves and turn a legible shade of gray without any needed adjustment. You can add pages to PDFs for extra notes or write in the margins with ease. The ReMarkable's thinness, two-week battery life, pen input and PDF management capabilities made this E Ink tablet my favorites. 

That being said, the ReMarkable 2 isn't without faults. The biggest issue is that it lacks any kind of backlight, which could be a deal breaker. Much like an actual book or notebook, this device requires an external light source to use in the dark. Even the cheapest Kindle now has front light illumination for night time use. It also doesn't function particularly well as an e-reader, as the only formats it supports are PDF and unprotected epub. That means that you won't be able to access your Kindle content or any other epub books with digital rights management software, which includes almost all legally purchasable ebooks on the market. 

Ultimately, I found this tablet to be incredibly useful. This is the cheapest E Ink tablet on our list, but it's still essentially just a PDF and note-taking device.

The Boox Note Air 2 is the most tablet-like E Ink device I tested. This 10.3-inch tablet features a resolution of 227 DPI, runs on a customized version of the Android 11 operating system and even has its own app store, where you can download third-party apps that have been optimized for the device. And yes, while it doesn't come pre-baked into the system, there is a way to access the full Google Play store – though I wouldn't recommend it for anything other than downloading an e-reading app, as the Boox still has an E Ink display and isn't made for games or video. A step-by-step on how to get the Google Play store installed is in this hands-on review of a previous model. 

Also, the Boox comes with only 64GB of nonexpandable storage, so you don't want apps filling up your system. The company does offer 5GB of cloud storage from its own service for free to help transfer documents to the device, though you can also use Dropbox, Evernote and OneNote.

The biggest benefit of the apps store is that you'll have access to your entire collection of books from your Kindle, Nook and Kobo library. You can also download the Libby app for library books, and Marvel Unlimited users can download the app and read comics, though not in color. The Note Air 2 includes speakers and a microphone, allowing you to listen to audiobooks from Audible or other audiobook apps. 

This is a great selling point of the device, but I found the in-app experience to be less than ideal. Many of the features that make the Note Air 2 unique are disabled in third-party apps. For example, you won't be able to use the pen to take notes or highlights in books on the Kindle app. Instead, you'll have to type in notes you want to take, like using the app on any other tablet. To write directly onto books, you'll need to have them in DRM-free ebook format. Luckily, the Boox supports a wide range of formats including PDF, epub, DOC and Mobi. 

Note taking and PDF management are strong on the Note Air 2 but not as seamless as on the ReMarkable 2. Highlights aren't automatically straightened, and users have to choose the color and width of the marker. The Note Air 2 provides 16 options of grayscale color, but they all look the same on the device, leaving highlights looking dark and messy. The included stylus also features 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity but lags ever so slightly when writing across the page. On the plus side, you can include audio recordings for more accurate retention. The Note Air 2 also lets you open a PDF and notebook at the same time in a split-screen view, giving you the ability to read and take notes all at once. 

Like the Kindle Paperwhite and Oasis, the Boox Note Air 2 comes with a warm and cold front light to help make the screen easier on the eyes and give it a more paper-like look. You can easily adjust both lights with a swipe-down menu. Plus, it also measures its battery life in weeks, not days.

While this tablet is by far the most expensive on our list, it's also the most versatile of the E Ink tablets and does a lot well but nothing great. 

You might see that the company has recently announced a Note Air 2 Plus. I haven't tried that one, but it's almost identical to the original Air 2 -- just with a bigger battery, which also makes it very slightly heavier.

Kobo might be a smaller company than Amazon, but it's been making e-readers for just about as long. While Amazon once made a 9.7-inch Kindle, the product never offered natural input with a touchscreen or stylus and was discontinued in 2014. More recently, Kobo was first with a waterproof e-reader, and it's the first of the major e-reading players to make a 10.3-inch device with a stylus. 

Like most Kobos, the Elipsa is an excellent e-reader and offers battery life measured in weeks, depending on use. Unlike Kindles, Kobos have a seemingly limitless ability to customize the reading experience. You can play continuously with margins, line spacing, fonts and font size to get a page that looks exactly how you want to, no matter the size of the screen. The included stylus can be used on any PDF or Kobo ePub, so it works just as well on library books as it does on books from the Kobo store.

Speaking of the library, Kobo is known for its deep integration with the ebook library service OverDrive. You can easily access, browse and download library books directly from your device, so long as your local library uses OverDrive. Borrowing an ebook from the New York Public Library was a seamless experience and one that makes all Kobos a must-have for library lovers. 

Unfortunately, the Elipsa's note-taking capabilities are lacking. There is a noticeable lag when writing with the stylus for any length of time, and the notebook features are fairly basic. Only four templates are available in the basic notebooks and only a single lined template in the advanced notebooks. Advanced notebooks do let you insert drawings, diagrams, math equations and a free-form section, while also offering the ability to convert your handwriting to text. There are only a few pen types to choose from and only five pen brush sizes. 

I wasn't able to use the notebook feature for anything other than the most basic scribbles and wouldn't recommend it for anything more than that. 

The Kobo Elipsa has 32GB of storage, a resolution of 227 DPI and a blue front light, but it lacks the warm light of the Boox. While this E Ink tablet misses the mark on long-from writing, it excels as a large-screen, library-friendly e-reader with the ability to scribble in the margins. 

How we test E Ink tablets

Every E Ink tablet undergoes extensive hands-on testing. In this case, each tablet was used for one week of rehearsal in a professional theatrical production. This involved evaluating the set-up process, loading PDFs and books onto the devices, and using both the device and included stylus as a script during full six-hour days of rehearsal. Tasks included highlighting, taking notes in the margins, and creating and taking detailed notes in notebooks. We also downloaded ebooks onto the device and used it as a recreational e-reader.

Anecdotally, we considered the hardware design and features, stylus capabilities, overall ease of use, effective UI layouts, notebook settings, E Ink settings, PDF markup capabilities, e-reading settings and format compatibility, app support and performance, and the overall speed and reliability of the system.

How is an E Ink tablet different from an e-reader?

Both e-readers and E Ink tablets use E Ink technology to render words and images on the page. They both offer a distraction-free experience that's easier on the eyes than a traditional LCD color screen. 

E-readers tend to be smaller than size and focus only on the experience of reading a book or PDF. E Ink tablets offer e-reading features but also include the ability to use a stylus to write notes in a digital notebook and/or in the margins of PDFs and ebooks. Since handwriting is integral to the E Ink tablet experience, the devices themselves tend to be bigger in order to more closely approximate the size of a sheet of paper. 

Why isn't a Kindle on this list?

Amazon's Kindle lineup of e-readers are some of the best known and most popular E Ink devices. However, the company doesn't make an E Ink device larger than 7 inches (although it used to), nor does it make one that offers the ability to take handwritten notes in Kindle books or in digital notebooks.

Who are E Ink tablets for?

E Ink tablets are best suited for people who enjoy writing notes or sketching by hand and who need to read and markup lots of PDF or DRM-free ebooks. They could be a particularly good fit for students, lawyers or any other professional in need of a digital, distraction-free note-taking device. 

They aren't for people who want constant notifications, fast processing speeds, to watch videos or play games.

Vizio M-Elevate Soundbar Review: Great Sound, Elevated Price

Vizio made its name with value-conscious televisions, but it has cemented that reputation with a remarkable procession of soundbars. As far as sound-for-money is concerned, nothing can beat models like the V21 and M512a -- each of which is the best at their respective price points in my book. In recent years Vizio has branched out into more luxurious soundbars, beginning with the original Elevate. The follow-up, matching the M-Series TVs, is the M-Series Elevate soundbar.

In Vizio's naming scheme, the 'M' usually suggests a midrange product, and yet this bar still comes with a $800 price tag. It performs well, both with music and movies, and will fill a modest living space with sound. The main "issue" for the M-Elevate, though, is that it's too similar to the $500 M512a-H6 -- both in terms of functionality and sound quality. The main tie-in with the premium Elevate are the revolving end pieces for Atmos height effects, but that doesn't quite justify the extra $300. 

Design

Let's get this out of the way first: The reason you're probably reading this review is because of that distinctive audio bling. Like the momma Elevate, the M-Elevate features a revolving driver at each end designed for Dolby Atmos. It works a little differently than the original version, however, as that model was able to physically revolve between stereo and Atmos mode. The pop-out height drivers of the M-Elevate can only engage when the soundbar detects Dolby Atmos or DTS:X content, not stereo. The user can change the light to one of a selection of colors -- adding customizability -- and the driver is held on by magnets in case it accidentally gets knocked. It just sticks straight back on. While the motorized LED indicator is hella cool, it's not entirely necessary.

The Vizio M512a-H6 is a surround system consisting of a main soundbar, a 6-inch subwoofer and two wired rear speakers. Like the M512a-H6, the M-Elevate is able to handle competitive DTS:X format as well as the latest HDMI eARC connectivity.

Despite being an Elevate model, the M-Elevate has more in common with the M512a-H6, both in terms of capability and in size. While the styling is different, the soundbar itself is similar to the cheaper model's bar at 41.38 inches wide, 2.6 inches high and 41.38 inches deep. The main grille, which hides three sets of mid-drivers and tweeters, is made of fabric, while the end piece that hides the two upfiring drivers is made of plastic and aluminum.

Likewise, the two systems' subwoofers each sport 6-inch drivers although the M-Elevate is contained in a slightly-more-elegant curved box. The surrounds that are physically wired to the sub via long cables are straight rears -- there are no heights here.

The M-Elevate features a selection of inputs, including HDMI in/out (with eARC), optical, USB (for WAV playback, which is a little odd) and two 3.5mm (headphone-size) analog input jacks. One of those 3.5mm connections is designed to connect a smart speaker like the Amazon Echo Dot, and the soundbar volume will mute if you issue it a command. Given that the soundbar doesn't have multiroom music like the Elevate, it's a relatively easy way to add it.

You see, like the M512a, the system's wireless connections are limited to Bluetooth. That's fine for many uses, but It's a shame that the M512 loses the Vizio Elevate's ability to stream Wi-Fi music and integrate with the Google Assistant. The $999 Elevate is still the only Vizio soundbar to offer Wi-Fi connectivity with Chromecast built in and Spotify Connect.

The system offers a number of sound modes including Movie, Music, Game and Direct, but one thing it doesn't have is a dedicated voice mode for making TV dialogue more understandable.

The top of the bar includes a limited number of controls such as power, volume, input and Bluetooth. The control is a proper wand rather than a plastic credit card, and the LCD display is used for initial setup and altering advanced settings. To adjust the volume of the height speakers is a little laborious, as you need to feed it a Dolby Atmos signal first (via a Netflix show, perhaps) or the remote will give you a "Not Available" message. 

One other issue I had with the remote is that changing inputs could be very slow -- if you took less than two seconds to change the input, the readout on the remote and the soundbar would go out of sync. This would necessitate putting my hand over the remote and cycling it back to the input that matched the bar.

How does it sound?

If you're paying more than $200 for a soundbar, you want to be sure it can truly act as a replacement for an AV receiver, and this means not only its ability to act as a switch, but to play music. I began my review with a couple of folk-centric Australian bands -- Dead Can Dance and Grand Salvo -- and began ratcheting up the tension after that. When I heard the first notes of Dead Can Dance's Yulunga I was immediately struck by how natural music sounded coming out of the soundbar. There was a lack of honkiness or nasal qualities, and I couldn't tell that the sound was coming out of a plastic tube in front of the TV. Lisa Gerrard's voice appropriately sounded huge and the room became a concert hall, with the deep bass of the percussion realistically rendered.

Next, Grand Salvo and his story of a lifelong friendship cut short in "Field of Flowers." The song starts with a gentle guitar strum and Paddy Mann's weary vocals, and the Vizio let the story play out. Yet, it was only during the chorus where the sound became a little pushy with the group vocals. Conversely, the price-comparable Sonos Arc was able to handle the same dynamic shifts but able to render the choir more agreeably.

After listening to a selection of different music I moved to surround sound and the lobby scene from The Matrix. I compared the M-Elevate against its M512a label-mate and found that the two shared a very similar sound -- not surprising given the soundtrack's reliance on deep bass and the similarity of the two subs.

After switching to the Sonos Arc I felt that Vizio's rival offered a better level of detail. For example, as the soldiers assemble in the lobby to take on Neo and Trinity one of them shouts "Freeze." The sound hung in the air on the Arc, and when the bullets started flying the Sonos also offered a wraparound effect of the Arc that wasn't matched by the M-Elevate. The Vizio was more subtle in playback during this scene but the Arc was more fun, but where the Arc couldn't match the M-Elevate was for deep bass due to the dedicated sub. 

The big test with a soundbar like this is "How does it sound with Dolby Atmos," and I found the answers to be a little disappointing for an $800 surround setup. While the M-Elevate was again able to provide true surround with the war epic 1917, and therefore gaining an advantage over the Arc, the Vizio's ability to provide height effects was limited. 

Sadly I was never able to get enough volume out of the M-Elevate's height drivers -- even at maximum it couldn't match either the M512a or the Arc for convincing overhead sounds. The CNET testing room has a 15 foot ceiling and the M-Elevate wasn't powerful enough to bounce sounds off it, though it was a little more successful with a 10 foot one. This isn't a problem for the less fancy M512a.

To illustrate the differences among the three soundbars, I listened to the opening scene of Mad Max: Fury Road and found that both the Sonos Arc and the Vizio M512a were able to project high and provide a true bubble of sound. Though the surrounds did help with immersion, the M-Elevate was only able to make the ethereal voices sound like they were coming from the screen. 

Should you buy it?

Vizio's main issue is that it didn't really need to fill the space between the M512a and the Elevate. The M-Elevate doesn't add all that much for the extra $300, though it works well in almost every regard but Dolby Atmos playback. As a result, the M-Elevate's main competitors are the two soundbars that bookend it: The M512a offers better sound and a better price while the Elevate offers a much bigger package with more useful features for $200 more. 

If you don't mind filling your room with boxes, the M-Elevate does offer a compelling alternative to the similarly priced Sonos Arc, and it sounds better with movies, too. Yet, that said, you should probably save some money and get the M512a instead.

Bridgerton Was the Biggest Thing on Netflix Last Week, Followed by More Bridgerton

Bridgerton's second season was Netflix's No. 1 most streamed title last week, with subscribers watching more hours of it cumulatively in a single week than any show on Netflix since Squid Game. And catch-up viewing of Bridgerton's first season revived it as Netflix's No. 2 most watched programming. 

In the week ended Sunday, Netflix customers globally streamed 251.7 million hours of Bridgerton's second season, which was released March 25. That's the most viewing of a show in a single week since the Squid Game phenomenon reached its peak at 571.8 million hours in one week straddling September and October last year. Catch-up viewing of Bridgerton's first season was 53 million hours, making it the second most popular thing to watch on the service. 

But Bridgerton's second season hasn't quite generated enough viewing to break into Netflix's all-time popularity ranking. As of Sunday, it was just below the level of streaming hours it needs to make it onto the service's Top 10 list for English-language TV series. That ranking, which lists shows with the most streaming hours in their first 28 days of release, requires that the second season reach 457.4 million viewing hours before it can knock the second season of You out from the No. 10 spot. 

Since Bridgerton's second season premiered, it has racked up 444.8 million hours, just shy of that bar. 

Bridgerton's first season remain's Netflix's No. 1 English-language TV show, with 625.5 million hours streamed in its first 28 days of release. (But nothing comes close to Squid Game, at 1.65 billion.) 

Netflix launched a website in mid-November posting weekly charts of its most popular shows and movies, as well as a global ranking of all-time most watched titles. The charts are updated every week and ranked by the total number of hours that subscribers spent watching them. 

The rankings represent an unprecedented trove of data about what's popular on Netflix, detailing the most popular titles in the last week not only globally but also for more than 90 individual countries. It is, by far, the most transparency that Netflix has ever adopted for its viewership. It will also help subscribers like you have a better grip on what's most popular on the world's biggest subscription streaming service. 

For years, Netflix was notoriously tight-lipped about its viewership. Beau Willimon -- creator of House of Cards, which put Netflix's original programming on the map -- once said the company wouldn't even share viewership metrics with him. 

But within the last two years, Netflix has become much more open about the popularity of its shows and movies to help it recruit talent and stoke buzz. First, Netflix added a top-trending ranking to its service, so people can see the most popular titles streaming on Netflix in their country on any given day. Then it also started publicly sharing popularity stats for certain titles, publicizing the number of accounts that watched two minutes of a particular title in its first month of release.

The company updates its weekly "Top 10 on Netflix" every Tuesday, based on hours viewed from Monday to Sunday the previous week for both original and licensed titles. The rankings are broken down into top-10 charts for films in English, TV in English, films in non-English languages and TV in non-English languages. A ranking of all-time most watched titles also lives on the site, detailing shows that have the most viewing hours in their first 28 days of release.

Correction, April 15: This story initially misstated the number of hours that Netflix customers globally streamed Bridgerton's second season for the week ending April 3. The number of viewing hours for its first season that week was also incorrect. The correct figures are 251.7 million hours and 53 million hours, respectively.

Your Apple Watch is getting a big new update with WatchOS 8, adding new workout options, messaging tools and some hints of what to expect ahead of the Apple Watch Series 7. The free download is available for all Apple Watch owners using the Series 3 or later and arrived alongside iOS 15 and iPadOS 15.

To download the update, first make sure your iPhone is running iOS 15. As long as your watch has at least 50% battery, go to Settings and select Software Update. If less, leave the Apple Watch on its charger and wait for the update to download. Once you have the update, here are some of the best features to explore.

WatchOS 8 puts portrait photos on your wrist

The new Portraits watch face can use any portrait mode photo taken on the iPhone. First, open the Watch app on the iPhone and then navigate to the Face Gallery. Find the Portraits watch face and tap Add to find portrait photos you want to display on the watch. 

Rather than displaying a static image, the watch uses segmentation data from the photo to separate the foreground from the background. This means the time appears just behind the head of your subject and if you raise your wrist or fidget with the Digital Crown, the subject pops in and out, too.

I've found it works best with photos that have a lot of distance between the foreground and background, plus ample headroom above your subject so you can really see the effect. Some complications are also supported, so you can put elements like battery level or heart rate on the watch face as well.

Also new in the watch faces tab is a World Time option. You can see the time around the world across all 24 timezones straight from your wrist.

AssistiveTouch is a mind-blowing accessibility feature

Apple announced AssistiveTouch in May along with a range of accessibility features for the iPhone and iPad.

It lets people who have the use of only one arm control the Apple Watch by movement in the hand and wrist, like pinching or clenching actions. The watch detects these motions so you don't need to be able to touch the screen to interact with the watch.

It's difficult to describe how intuitive this feels until you use it. Pinch your thumb and forefinger and the watch will move the focus to navigate through menu options. A double pinch moves back, while a clench is a tap action to select something on the screen. AssistiveTouch is also customizable, so you could set a double-clench action to answer a call or bring up the action menu. AssistiveTouch works with the Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE.

Better messaging tools

When you go to send a message, you'll now be able to use the scribble tool, the emoji selector or the dictation option all from the same screen. Plus, if you go to dictate a message but it makes an error in the transcription, you'll now be able to select the word and use the Digital Crown to make corrections. It's something I appreciate as my Australian accent often results in some pretty amusing dictation errors.

Just like on the iPhone, you can send a GIF by selecting the magnifying glass icon and either choosing from the trending list or searching for the GIF you want.

Contacts, Find My apps coming to WatchOS

The Contacts app is finally available on your wrist so you can edit, add, browse and share without pulling out your phone. Apple has also split its Find My app into two new apps: Find Items and Find Devices. They do exactly what they say on the tin and you can ping items like an AirTag or find devices signed in with your Apple ID from the Watch.

WatchOS 8 also works in conjunction with the Focus mode on the iPhone, so you can limit distractions coming through or customize modes so only notifications from certain contacts and apps break through. Once you apply the mode on the iPhone it automatically sets it on the Watch as well. It's also supposed to be smart about Focus suggestions, like prompting you to turn on the mode when you start a workout. I'll need to spend more time with the beta before it can pick up my usage patterns.

Two new workout options -- and Mindfulness

There are two new workout types you can track: Pilates and tai chi. They use customized heart rate and motion algorithms to better determine your effort than if you traced these workouts using the Other option in the workouts app. Apple's Fitness Plus also gets a picture-in-picture mode, plus additional workout filters.

Apple has also moved the Breathe app into a new Mindfulness app. In addition to animations to help guide your breathing, there's a Reflect app that gives prompts to help focus your thoughts. I really like the new animations in the Mindfulness app and in the short time I've used them, I've found they do help to focus my attention. The time you spend reflecting appears in the Health app on the iPhone (along with your heart rate) after each session.

Sleep tracking also adds respiration rate to the existing sleep metrics like heart rate and time asleep. You can also view trends over time in the Health app on the iPhone.

More flexibility for Apple Watch cyclists

Cyclists get some bonuses in WatchOS 8 like auto workout detection for bike rides, plus an auto-pause and resume option so you don't eat into your workout time when not riding. Plus fall detection now works for bike rides, so if the Apple Watch detects you taking a tumble, it can call emergency services and notify emergency contacts. Apple said fall detection for workouts will come in an update to WatchOS 8 later this year for the Series 4 and later.

Other new workout features include audible feedback cues. You'll be able to hear workout milestones -- such as when you close your activity rings -- announced through the Apple Watch speaker, or in your ear if you have Bluetooth headphones connected.

More features to come in the Wallet app

Apple is hoping you'll ditch your physical wallet altogether and access everything from your wrist. Later in the year, iOS 15 and WatchOS 8 will be able to store a digital identity card like a driver's license in the Wallet app. Access keys for hotels and offices can also be held digitally.

The Apple Watch Series 6 will support ultrawideband, or UWB, for car keys so you can unlock your vehicle or start it remotely, without needing to touch or tap anything on the Apple Watch. It does depend on the vehicle manufacturer and it will also roll out later in the year.

Another childhood toy is coming soon to a theater near you. J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot production company has teamed up with Warner Bros. Pictures and toymaker Mattel to produce a live-action action film about the Hot Wheels line of toy cars.

"Growing up, Hot Wheels were more than just cars, they were vehicles for our imaginations," Peter Dodd, Warner Bros. vice president of production, said in a statement. "Today, we at Warner Bros. are thrilled to bring that imagination to the big screen with Robbie Brenner and the creative team at Mattel along with the ingenious minds of J.J. Abrams, Hannah Minghella and the team at Bad Robot."

Very little about the Hot Wheels movie was revealed, as cast, plot and release date aren't yet available. But Hot Wheels toys were first introduced in 1968, and have had a presence in the toy boxes of Gen Xers and following generations ever since.

Mattel and Warner Bros. are also working on a star-studded motion picture about the popular Barbie doll, set to come out in 2023. And get ready to see more childhood toys take the big screen. Mattel Films is developing movies based on American Girl dolls, Major Matt Mason action figures, the Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots boxing toy, and even -- not sure how this will work -- the card game Uno.

Paramount Plus, Showtime Now Available in a Single App with Bundle Discount

Paramount Plus and Showtime have merged their content libraries into a single app experience, Paramount announced on Wednesday. The new launch includes a discount rate for a limited time to US customers.  

While you can still have Paramount Plus or Showtime as standalone subscriptions, the bundle is available for $8 per month for the ad-supported Essential Plan and $13 per month for the ad-free Premium Plan. In fall 2021, the streamer introduced the Paramount Plus with Showtime bundle for $12 monthly for the Essential version, and $15 a month its Premium offering. 

Previously, both streaming services were available as bundle offerings that required separate logins. During its investor call in February, Paramount shared that both platforms would combine into a single app, giving viewers access to programming from Showtime's premium catalog and everything under the Paramount Plus banner. You can now watch 1883, Billions, The Chi, Yellowjackets, Star Trek: Discovery, live channels and more with one click, if you upgrade your account. 

New and existing customers can sign up for the new bundle by Oct. 2 in order to receive the discount. After that, the price increases to $12 for the Essential plan or $15 for a Premium subscription.

Despite massive data breaches that have come to light in recent days, people haven't learnt to protect their personal information.

A Lenovo employee has lost a company-issued laptop containing unencrypted payroll data belonging to colleagues based in the Asia Pacific region, where the company is headquartered, The Register reported Tuesday. The information included names, monthly pay figures and bank account numbers.

The employee, based in Singapore, found the laptop missing in September, according to an internal letter dated Nov. 21 that's been seen by the publication. Staff have been advised to watch out for unusual activities in their bank accounts. 

Lenovo's letter said there has been "no indication" that data has been misused or compromised yet, but one employee expressed deep concerns about the matter to The Register: "How on earth did they let this data exist on a laptop that was not encrypted?"

The company added it is working with local police to recover the device, and "reviewing work practices and control in this location to ensure similar incidents do not occur."

CNET reached out to Lenovo for comment and received the following statement:

"Lenovo is working closely with local authorities to investigate the theft in September of a Singapore employee's work laptop computer. Asia Pacific employees whose data was on the stolen device have been notified. To date, there is no indication that any information has been compromised or misused."

Who is WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum?

WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum isn't what you'd call a bragger, but he has plenty to boast about.

In just five years, Koum and WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton have created one of the world's largest messaging apps -- an app that Facebook just agreed to buy for $16 billion, plus an additional $3 billion in stock options that will vest over the next several years.

With the acquisition, Koum, 38, will join Facebook's board of directors, but WhatsApp will remain autonomous and independent from the social network, much like Instagram. Koum wrote in a blog post on Wednesday that WhatsApp will continue with its original mission, which is "building a cool product used globally by everybody."

As far as Silicon Valley CEOs go, Koum keeps a low profile and is a man of few words. He likes to curse, claims to distrust advertising, and tends to downplay his success.

His simple Twitter account doesn't list his CEO title, and his bio is the Kanye West quote, "We on a galaxy the haters cannot visit." Koum tweets sporadically and only follows one account -- Jesus Christ Silicon Valley, which is a joke blog about the tech world.

Koum's LinkedIn account is even more sparse, along with a healthy dose of self-deprecation. He lists his job title as WhatsApp's "Sr. Tweet Manager" and says he's "building cool %&*# used by millions of people." His past work experience shows that he "did some work" for Yahoo. Koum lists that he "barely graduated" from high school in 1995 and "dropped out" of San Jose State University.

Koum immigrated to the US from Communist Ukraine when he was a teenager. A few years after attending San Jose State University, he got a job at Yahoo and worked there for nine years at first in systems security and then in infrastructure engineering. Yahoo was where Koum met Acton. In 2007, the two left Yahoo; and in 2009, they launched WhatsApp.

Based on making the world more open and connected, Koum and Acton fashioned WhatsApp as a simple alternative to texting. The idea was to create a service where people could reach friends and family anywhere in the world on any type of smartphone without having to pay for each message. Different than other messaging apps, WhatsApp costs 99 cents for iOS and is free on Android for the first year, and then costs 99 cents.

Relaying billions of messages a day and with 450 million monthly active users -- more than 70 percent of whom are active on a daily basis -- WhatsApp is on par or has surpassed many major social networks and messaging services, like Skype, Facebook Messenger, and Twitter.

Despite the fact that Koum has kept a quiet public presence, he has been vocal about his distaste for advertising. During an interview last April, Koum said he wanted to continue to focus on messaging as the company's core service and not turn WhatsApp into an advertising showcase.

"Mobile and messaging is the only thing we do," he said at the time. "It's in our heart and in our blood and DNA."

It appears Facebook's acquisition of WhatsApp shouldn't change Koum's objectives. In his blog post on Wednesday, he said the partnership will allow WhatsApp to continue on its simple mission.

"This will give WhatsApp the flexibility to grow and expand, while giving me, Brian, and the rest of our team more time to focus on building a communications service that's as fast, affordable and personal as possible," he wrote. "And you can still count on absolutely no ads interrupting your communication. There would have been no partnership between our two companies if we had to compromise on the core principles that will always define our company, our vision and our product."

2022 Honda Pilot Sport becomes new base trim, results in hefty price jump

2022 Honda Pilot shoppers will find a new base model at dealerships when the latest SUVs show up. But the trim changes also mean buyers will pay a few thousand dollars more for the least expensive Pilot available. The SUV's new base trim will be the Sport, while the LX trim kicks the bucket. Effectively, this creates a $4,280 price increase.

Cars Direct first reported on the trim changes Monday citing Honda's order guide, and the brand confirmed the changes to Roadshow. The Pilot will now start at $38,055 after a destination charge, or $40,055 with all-wheel drive. That's up from $33,775 for the outgoing LX trim. However, these changes come with a whole lot more equipment, so if you're trying to find the value proposition, there may be one.

The Pilot will now come standard with an 8-inch touchscreen, 20-inch wheels and leather seats right out of the gate. It's not clear what other changes are coming, aside from a TrailSport model that will complement the latest Passport TrailSport trim.

Essentially, if you're shopping in the three-row SUV segment, you may find more of what you like standard with the 2022 Pilot, without jumping through optional packages and the like. That's for buyers to say with their wallets, however.
